An Agility course slot holds one obstacle at a time. The obstacle list, filtered to one realm and one slot, lines up the candidates with what unlocking the slot requires, what each costs, the XP each run gives and the passive it grants.
Worked example: Obstacle 2 in the Melvor Realm. The slot needs Agility level 10, and four obstacles compete for it, each costing 50,000 GP:
- Balance Beam: 11 Skill XP every 4 seconds; +2% Agility Skill XP.
- Monkey Bars: also 250 Oak Logs; 7 Skill XP every 3 seconds; -4% Firemaking Interval.
- Rope Jump: 13 Skill XP every 7 seconds; +3% Smithing Mastery XP.
- River Crossing: also 200 Paper; 12 Skill XP every 5 seconds; -5% Cartography survey interval, -5% dig site map refinement cost, +5% Cartography Skill XP.
Build the one whose passive helps what you are training: Balance Beam for Agility itself, Monkey Bars for Firemaking, Rope Jump for Smithing Mastery and River Crossing for Cartography. The game's own guide adds: "Obstacles will become inactive if there is a gap in your Obstacle Course. This means the Global Active Passives will become Inactive. The game will tell you when this happens."
