  1. You just start to drift off to sleep before a frantic pounding at your door makes you jump up and start grabbing for something nearby to protect yourself. Your door opens a bit more gently than you'd expect considering the knocking, and you find Companion Name looking worried with a young woman behind her. She holds up something about as thick as your finger with a sickly pale yellow hue.

  2. Companion

Her daughter was out fishing near the river and didn't come home for dinner. Sorry to interrupt your sleep, but I figured you'd want to help.

  3. You

You're not wrong. And the thing you're holding?

  4. Companion

Golbin tooth. The only... blood, that was there was blue, so...

  5. Companion

The girl is okay, at least for now, I'd imagine.

  6. You

Good, good. Then, just the two of us are headed out?

  7. Companion

Thankfully, no. Jass has been making a bit of progress with her 'militia' and they want to join us.

  8. You

It's anyone's guess how many Golbins there will be. It'd be smart to let them come to us.

  9. You

What if we set the same scene as... the incident, have have Jass's people waiting for them?

  10. Nan

Just please... hurry. I'm hopeful my little Ana is safe, but... it's not like they took her for a fun little stroll around the woods. I know she must be so frightened...

  11. You

Don't worry, we'll do everything that we can.

  12. You gather your things and leave your bed behind, meeting up with Jass and a couple of folks just outside. Some of them hold the bows Companion Name helped them make, some holding new ones they must have created themselves. However, any decent force has variety - archers wouldn't fare well if the Golbins got in their ranks - and their inventiveness hasn't improved in the short time since you helped them last. Jass asks for a couple of new toys for the folks that haven't taken well to the bow.

  1. The folks take up their new weapons eagerly. Though it has only been a short time since Jass gathered them, the combined militia now totaled a couple dozen. You notice as you hand out swords, though most don't have any conventional fighting experience, these people tend to lean capable. Lumber Workers and farmers who've built functional bodies through years of hard labour. Against a trained fighting force, sure, they'd hardly stand a chance. But against a group of ragtag Golbins? You like their odds.

  2. Companion

    Jass, you sure about this?

  3. Jass

They might not have much experience, but the folks that couldn't hit the broad side of a barn - or just otherwise hated trying to use the bows - I've had running drills with sticks and leftover tools.

  4. Jass

They got a long way to go, but they know enough to hold their own. I'm not sending them in to die, don't worry.

  5. Companion

Good, good. Azamire can't get much smaller if we want to keep calling ourselves a town.

  6. You

If this ambush goes well, they won't need to fight much. Just need to look scary and grab one of two of the Golbins to tell us where they brought the girl.

  7. You

If everyone's ready, let's head out to the river, then?

  8. Companion Name leads you to the river where the girl went missing. You fondly recall learning to swim with Companion Name here, years ago, and wish you were here under less dire circumstances. The militia disperses through the surrounding forest, headed by Jass who quietly gives orders, trying to get people hidden as best she can. You and Companion Name settle in by the riverbank, and pull out your rods, hoping to catch a bit more than just a few fish. You're a bit too nervous for idle conversation, so you both quietly fall into a rhythm, just trying to look like two innocuous people fishing late into the night.

  1. You worry for a moment that one of the militia members is being too loud before you see it. A group of Golbins, sauntering up with hardly a care in the world, barking orders at one another, trying to surround you and Companion Name. It's... more than you expected, and as you start to get up to defend yourself, an arrow sinks right between the leading Golbin's shoulder blades.

  2. Jass

    Everyone, now!

  3. Jass

Make sure to leave a couple breathing!

  4. Companion

Bet you I'll kill more than you. Try not to die.

  5. You

    You're on.

  6. Companion Name's look of anxiety hidden under bravado is quickly replaced with confidence as the woods explode with movement. The militia lets loose a volley of arrows that pepper the unprepared Golbins, scattering them and sending a few more to the ground. What's left of them gather themselves and charge towards you and your friend, or the quickly approaching villagers armed with swords.

Dialogue
  1. You look around as the movement begins to settle. The Golbin force was larger than you had anticipated, but your efforts went as well as could be expected. Among the bodies littering the forest floor, from what you could see, only a couple were human, which was better than expected considering their experience. You rush over as you hear a shout from Jass, who managed to pin a dark green Golbin to ground. The beast would have hardly came up to your hip had it been on its feet, and you could hear it whimpering and begging not to be hurt. It quickly rattles off fragments of information that it thinks could be useful, detailing how its clan was taken over by a rival group led by someone it called the 'Ringleader', its own name - Gloob - and how it really really wants to live. Jass slaps her hand over its mouth and asks it where the girl they kidnapped was, and why they took her. Gloob goes one step further, and says that it'll lead you all there to its nearby camp, and that they were going to try and paint him and sell him off too, whatever that may mean. You discuss it briefly together, and decide to 'trust' it to do as it says. Surely enough, the camp is close, and the leftover defenders quickly scatter as they see they're vastly outnumbered, leaving their camp behind. You and Companion Name quickly find Ana in one of their tents and take her home, while Jass and the militia handle a dozen or so other folks who had been captured from elsewhere throughout the countryside. Ana's mother meets you just outside of Azamire with tears in her eyes, thanking you over and over again for saving her daughter.
