Pointy Preparation

Step 1

Objective
Just putting some pointy rocks on some wood, nothing too tough.
When complete
I think they've gotten the idea.

  1. The cinders from the assault on Azamire have only just fizzled out, much like many of the survivors' will to go on. Everyone that remained had lost something. Their homes. Family members. Friends. You and Companion Name sit on the soot covered cobbles that once made up the town's main thoroughfare, watching another family carry what little they have left and shuffle out of town, hoping that some nearby village may have been spared. Neither of you blame them. A woman with a bloodied stump where her hand should have been approaches the two of you and falls to the ground beside you with a sigh.

  2. Jass

Well. You two headed out as well?

  3. You

I can't turn my back on Azamire. Too many folks have done too much for me, growing up.

  4. Jass

Doubt many of 'em are left.

  5. You

    The town still is, though.

  6. Jass

    Not much of it.

  7. Companion

I take it you're leaving, then? Can't blame you, but this is home for the both of us. Even if... Home's looking a little worse for wear.

  8. Jass

Gods no! No shame to those who are, but those rotters took more than just my hand. Teri... didn't make it.

  9. Companion

    Oh Jass... I'm so sorry.

  10. Jass

Fool of a man got between me and one of those wretches' beasts. Seemed like he was going to pull through... but then he didn't.

  11. You

...We'll make them pay, Jass. Companion Name and I won't let this go unanswered.

  12. Jass

You're not alone in your sentiment. I came by to see if you two might be interested in a little project.

  13. Jass

A couple of people who aren't running for the hills want to fight back. But they're farmers. Builders.

  14. Jass

I used to be pretty good with a bow, but it'd be a bit tough with this hand... or lack thereof.

  15. Companion

Want us to show them the ropes? Been a little while since I shot a bow, but I can show a couple of farmers where to point it and how not to shoot their friends.

  16. You

...Are you forgetting what happened a couple of years ago? I still feel the need to duck every time you-

  17. Companion

Okay, fine, Player Name can do the teaching, maybe I'll learn something too. Is there anything else that I could help with?

  18. Jass

Actually, yes. Like I said, most of these folks hardly know anything outside of their trade. Showing them how to put together a couple of arrows could go a long way towards making them self-sufficient.

  19. The three of you chat back and forth for a while, putting together the idea of a lesson plan, putting up some ramshackle targets meant to resemble a humanoid figure, and some scavenged gear. Jass brings back a dozen or so dusty villagers from town who seem to carry a wide range of emotions. Some, determined to fight back against the cloaked figures who destroyed the town, some who looked lost and aimless, and some somewhere in between. Companion Name takes half of them and gets to work showing them how to make bows, something they were always better at than actually firing them, while you take the other half and get to work showing them how to make arrows.

Step 2

Dialogue
  1. Many of the folks picked up your teaching pretty quickly. Even Jass, just managing with a single hand, did a fine job putting together some flight-worthy arrows. Companion Name's lesson seemed to go about as smoothly, and they produced a few bows to share amongst themselves for the next bout of training. The villagers quietly, but excitedly, show off what they managed to make, or laugh about how poorly their creations turned out, depending on their results.

  2. Jass

Thank you two for all of this, by the way.

  3. You

Of course. It'll be important for us to not get caught out like this again.

  4. Companion

This group has a long way to go, still. We had guards, but they lasted all of a few minutes before those things started cutting through the town.

  5. Jass

It's a start, though. And besides, keeping these people busy is just as important as making sure they're trained.

  6. Jass

Dwelling on everything that happened... Well, that's no good for anyone.

  7. Jass

Anyway. Shall we get to shooting?

  8. You

As long as Companion Name doesn't stick me with an arrow, sure.

  9. Companion Name glares at you, but you've known them long enough to know there's no real anger there, just like they know you have no malice in your light banter. Though, you start to think otherwise when the villagers pick up their bows and start trying to hit the targets. You feel as though their arrows pass by you more often than the targets. You get to work quickly, trying to show them how to draw, aim, and fire, before they really hurt someone.

Dialogue
  1. You certainly lost a bit of skin from arrows that passed by a bit too close for comfort, but after a while, the villagers' shots start to resemble straight flight paths. A couple folks pick it up faster than the others, among them, Companion Name, though you still could hardly say you felt safe just yet. Initially, Jass seemed to be a bit frustrated at not being able to join in the demonstration, but fell into her own role guiding people and repeating your instructions to those that seemed to struggle the first few times around, or giving pointers that even you started to incorporate into your own shots. By the end of the day, the villagers didn't seem to actively be putting one another in danger, and looked far more determined than they did at the start of the drill, and you entrust them into Jass's tutelage, for better or worse.
